As many as 2-5 million Eared Grebes - or 70 - 95% of the world's population - visit Great Salt Lake annually. In late summer and fall, Eared Grebes at Great Salt Lake are flightless for a period of several months while they molt their feathers and put on enough weight to migrate. Because they also don't walk well, they are extremely reliant on the food source in the lake during this time. This is a serious concern as salinity climbs, threatening the brine flies and brine shrimp that the grebes feed on. Eared grebes are currently considered a common bird, but are vulnerable because of their dependence on saline lakes. As many as 2-5 million Eared Grebes - or 70 - 95% of the world's population - visit Great Salt Lake annually. In late summer and fall, Eared Grebes at Great Salt Lake are flightless for a period of several months while they molt their feathers and put on enough weight to migrate. Because they also don't walk well, they are extremely reliant on the food source in the lake during this time. This is a serious concern as salinity climbs, threatening the brine flies and brine shrimp that the grebes feed on. Eared grebes are currently considered a common bird, but are vulnerable because of their dependence on saline lakes.
