<image:caption>Eared grebe at Great Salt Lake. As many as 2-5 million Eared Grebes - or 70 - 95% of the world's population - visit Great Salt Lake annually. In late summer and fall, Eared Grebes at Great Salt Lake are flightless for a period of several months while they molt their feathers and put on enough weight to migrate. Because they also don't walk well, they are extremely reliant on the food source in the lake during this time. This is a serious concern as salinity climbs, threatening the brine flies and brine shrimp that the grebes feed on. Eared grebes are currently considered a common bird, but are vulnerable because of their dependence on saline lakes. Should Great Salt Lake continue to decline, Eared Grebes may besome a candidate for endangered species listing.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A railroad causeway divides the lake into two arms, north and south. To the north, the water is pink and devoid of bird-sustaining invertebrates due to its extreme high salt concentration. The south arm is still blue or green, but is in danger of becoming hypersaline as its fresh water tributaries dry up. An exposed section of the Behren’s trench, normally submerged, is visible as a pink line running roughly parallel to the railroad causeway.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Pink water and seafoam in the hypersaline north arm of Great Salt Lake. The water is pink because the only organisms that can survive here - extreme salt-loving microbes - are pink. The north arm is truly a dead sea - microbialites, brine flies, brine shrimp, and birds do not thrive here.</image:caption>

Great Salt Lake contains the world's largest population of living microbialites, a photosynthetic reef-like structure on the lakebed underpinning the lake's food chain. About half of the world's Eared grebes (as many as 3-4 million individuals) stop to feed at this shallow inland sea on their way south for winter, and then lose their flight muscles for several months. Being almost incapable of walking on land, they are essentially stranded in the vast open water of the lake until they gain enough fat reserves to complete their migration. This makes Eared grebes both deeply dependent on the lake's ecology and deeply vulnerable as the lake declines.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About Draft 11012025</image:title>
