Florida workshop recap

Last month, I went to Florida as an instructor with Out of Chicago for their first ever bird photography conference in and around Merritt Island, Florida. I like teaching, but don’t have the time to organize and run my own workshops anymore, so when Chris from Out of Chicago reached out, I thought it was a great chance to teach and to meet the famously chill birds of Florida—plus a whole bunch of incredible instructors I’ve admired from afar (what a lineup).

It was a whirlwind! An absolute blast, and busy almost every second of every day. Hats off to the organizers for pulling off such a complex event in such good style. Also, hats off to the attendees. This was a group of almost 100 very accomplished photographers from every genre. Many were newer to bird photography, but brought great perspective and insights from their years of photography experience. They were excited to learn about birds, and they were game to try just about any crazy thing we threw at them. I learned many lessons from the attendees (and I hope they learned something from me, too).

Of course my focus was on the students and not my own photography, but I still managed to snap thousands of shots while demonstrating and scouting with the attendees. Here are a few of my favorites.
